What is Cheese?

Cheese uses your webcam to take photos and videos, applies fancy special effects and lets you share the fun with others. It was written as part of Google's 2007 Summer of Code lead by daniel g. siegel and mentored by Raphaël Slinckx, and has most of the classical photo booth features after a bare couple of months of development. Under the hood, Cheese uses GStreamer to apply fancy effects to photos and videos. After a success of the Summer of Code, the development continued and we still are looking for people with nice ideas and patches ;)

What are the Requirements?

Well, if you want to keep them, they are yours, we donate them to you! But if you want to bug some people and kick some ass, you should report them to the GNOME Bug Tracking System.
Also, please try to test your bug against the SVN version of Cheese first. Your problem may already be fixed!

Unstable verson 2.23.2 was released! New features since previous version include:

  • a new, shiny countdown widget
  • use of xdg for storing pictures and videos
  • new naming for pictures and videos
  • add support for nautilus sendto
  • add a preference dialog with resolution changing
  • fixed a lot of crashers
  • added/updated translations

Unstable verson 2.23.1 was released! New features since previous stable version include:

  • add hildon support
  • add a nice warning box when no camera was found
  • move cheese to sound&video section in the application menu
  • make Drag and Drop working again
  • fixed a lot of crashers

Stable verson 2.22.1 was released! New features since previous stable version include:

  • fix crashing of cheese on some webcam devices
  • allow opening of webcam devices listed in gconf
  • set the max waiting time for detecting a camera to 10 seconds
  • do not allow to take pictures, while the webcam is initializing
  • show our fancy countdown widget by default
  • added/updated translations
