Graphic Designer

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, and working with staff and volunteers, responsibilities include:

  • Determine the message the design should portray
  • Create images that identify a product or convey a message
  • Develop graphics for product illustrations, logos, and websites
  • Select colors, images, text style, and layout
  • Assist with marketing efforts and our ability to reach target audiences
  • Working with a globally diverse group of paid and volunteer staff

Job brief

We are looking for an experienced Graphic Designer to help GNOME create visual concepts to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate our users and partners. You will develop the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.

Our current list of priorities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support and material creation for our new Coding Education Challenge for the Foundation
  • Outreach and marketing of the GNOME Foundation and project
  • Design of assets and documents to help promote the GNOME system
  • Gap analysis for Foundation and project material and design
  • Support and creation of brand guidelines

To be an excellent graphic designer, you must be creative and detail-oriented, comfortable working with diverse teams, and have the ability to inspire and motivate others. If you have further skills in marketing and digital media, we’d like to meet you.

The goal will be to create and maintain the projects visual identity and marketing materials, according to the organization’s standards. This role reports to the Executive Director.

This role is initially set as a full-time, fixed one year contract. It is the intention that the Foundation will renew this contract and we hope it will become a permanent position. This is, however, reliant on future fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares work to be accomplished by gathering information and materials
  • Plans concept by studying information and materials
  • Illustrates concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts
  • Obtains approval of concept by submitting rough layout for approval
  • Prepares finished copy and art by operating typesetting, printing, and similar equipment; and purchasing from vendors
  • Prepares final layout by marking and pasting up finished copy and art
  • Completes projects by coordinating with outside agencies, art services, printers, etc.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending design workshops; reviewing professional publications; and participating in professional societies.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Requirements

  • Understanding of and belief in the organization’s mission, vision, and values
  • Proven experience as a graphic designer or relevant position
  • Tech savvy, proficient in graphic design software suites, with a strong preference to free software design tools
  • Ability to work with diverse and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Detail-oriented and proactive approach to managing time-sensitive and competing workloads
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented and efficient
  • Flexible schedule outside of typical working hours, with the ability and willingness to work occasional nights or weekends as necessary
  • Ability and willingness to travel abroad
  • Ability to work remotely as part of a global team
  • BA in graphic design or relevant experience
