The stable branch of OpenOffice.org got screwed up somehow. Joy. Now we have to resort to a known-good date from CVS.

Oralia gave me a haircut and it came out really well. It's nice to be able to just swipe the towel over your head after showering and be dry.

Took Oralia to the gynecologist in the morning for her usual check-up, and then we went for lunch at La Salamandra, a tiny but good hamburger joint in Coyoacán. Then, back to the office.

Woke up "earlier" than usual due to switching out of DST. Had breakfast in Coyoacán. Got a long-sleeved t-shirt with a tie-dye pattern that reminds me of Rush's Vapor Trails album cover.

For lunch we made fondue and ate the leftover zucchini. Then we plugged the stereo to the DVD and watched The Wall, which I had never seen before. Marvelousness.

Rubén, Adriana, and Oralia's parents dropped by in the evening, and we ate some fantastic pan de muerto that they brought.

Worked for a while on adding 32-bit RGBA image support into the OpenOffice core. How do you get a pixel from an image? You call a method that spits you back an instance of the BitmapColor class! No wonder GdkPixbuf and friends are way faster.

Oralia made zucchini in tomato sauce which we had with cream and cotija cheese, and then baked fish marinated in orange juice, with tomatoes, onions, chile serrano, and epazote. What a wonderful lunch.

In the evening we went to watch Pauline en Paulette, and it was really good. It's unfortunate that as is usual for non-U.S. films, the best cinema chain in Mexico decided to show the movie only in their smaller theaters with smallish screens — if anything, the scene of the town square covered with flowers would have been breathtaking if it had been shown on the huge screens where they show movies that have lots of explosions.

Yesterday afternoon we had a long 2-hour power outage. What a total pain in the ass. Being able to do no work, Oralia and myself went to have a sushi dinner in the dark. The waiter set up a candle on our table while it rained outside, how romantic. Eventually power was restored, we finished our dinner, and went back home.

Poked more around OO.o's icon/bitmap/toolkit code to add alpha compositing for icons. Got frustrated by really ugly code and long, quirky builds. This is going to look very pretty in the end, though.

In the morning we took the car for the regular emissions check. You hand in your papers, pay a sum that sounds too expensive, make a queue, wait for some monkey to take your car to the cool wheel rollers on the floor, have them plug a magic gas analysis machine to the exhaust pipe which is in turn plugged to a PC, and then you wait. They either fine you or give you a sticker that says that your car is fine and that you have to come back in six months for another emissions check.

Today on University radio there is a mixture of Bach, Philip Glass, Astor Piazzolla suites, Henryk Gorecki, Peter Gabriel, mediaeval music, and random, very cool percussion.
Yesterday I got a totally fantastic CD of Bach's piano concertos with Murray Perahia. It's been a while since I last got a CD that I wanted to listen to all day long.

There is a new brand of toilet paper these days, Regio Lady, which advertises itself as being designed specifically for women. The other day we got a free sample roll in the supermarket, and today I decided to give it a try. It is pale pink with a flowery pattern and it is scented like peach gelatin. On a casual morning test it was not superior to our usual brand of toilet paper and it was not inferior, either. But while it fails to deliver an improved ass-wiping experience, it is quite a bit more expensive than regular toilet paper. The pink color and the flowery pattern are fine, I guess, although I am not excited by the peach scent — I do not regularly smell my butt after wiping it clean. Maybe I'm not convinced because I am a man, but given the price difference I guess we will not be buying it.

Today we had lunch in the San Pedro de los Pinos seafood market, and it was pretty good. We had baby shark tacos, shrimp and octopus cocktails, and stuffed crabs. Then we went to look for my father at his house as he lives nearby, but nobody was home.
We wanted to go to the movies in the evening, but we decided to stay home instead and read our new books.

We went downtown with my mother to look in textiles shops for suitable fabrics for a dress she wants to make.

In the evening we went to the OFUNAM concert. Carlos Prieto played Federico Ibarra's cello concerto, which I had never heard, and Shostakovich's 1st cello concerto. Both were awesome, but he was visibly nervous during Shosty's. Then the orchestra played Shosty's 5th symphony. It was a great evening.
The orchestra seems to be playing much better now that it has a new conductor — perhaps they are getting more well-deserved lashings. They still need to "fix" the trombones and the bassoon, which are always recalcitrant.
Pedro was there with a friend of his and they enjoyed the concert a lot, too.

We went to watch The Bourne Identity, which is pretty entertaining until the end. I wonder if Matt Damon wants to turn into a Tom Cruise-like action-movie sort of actor...
At the theater we ran into Pedro, whom I had not seen in a long time.

I woke up in the middle of the night and I was not able to back to sleep for a while. I kept thinking about how to write an xmon replacement that would be really useful — a color-coded log of all X requests and replies, the ability to peek at pixmaps and re-play bits of the log so that you can see things getting drawn, associating the events that result from a single request, all that. It would be pretty cool for profiling purposes. I may start working on it as a weekend project.

We finally got around to organizing our CD collection. It is in alphabetical order now, divided in classical / non-classical / movie soundtracks. We do need a new cabinet for CDs, though, as the little bookcase we have right now is completely full.

Hugo and Juanita came by and will be staying with us for a couple of days. Hugo made some really good hamburgers for lunch. In the afternoon we went to the supermarket and then tried to go to the movies, but the film we wanted to watch is not showing yet. Bleh. So we went back home and watched Amélie for the Nth time. For dinner I made some vodka-flamed pasta with mushrooms and cilantro, and it was pretty good.

We had a kick-ass potato soup and meat with nopales en salsa verde for lunch. It was fantastic.

Our band played in downtown today, in the house of our console-man, who was having an anti-war party of sorts. Oddly enough, the sound was so bad that we were really not happy. I had to use a Fender guitar amp for my keyboard, which led to a horrible whiny and distorted sound.
The trip downtown was very unpleasant because the streets there are completely wasted these days -- they removed the pavement and there are holes and dirt and piping all over the place. Who knows what they are changing. I took a few night pictures of the area, though, which may be interesting. It looks like a war zone.

Early conference call with the GNOME Board to discuss the foundation membership issue. Nat's proposal is very sane. I just find it annoying that while there are a few borderline cases that can be handled easily through common sense, there have to be written guidelines that can handle them.

Started untangling the icon loading code in OO.o. I'm still not comfortable with the layout of the source tree, even though it does make sense.

Great progress on the libart <-> OpenOffice.org bits. Linear gradients work almost fine. Circular gradients have problems. But it is good to be able to print the damn things. I'm thinking of writing some documentation for libart; it really has a great modular architecture for the intersector and drawing pipelines, but it needs to be explained.

Tonight a dragonfly decided to take a nap while clinging to the cute violet trefoils that Maru gave us, so we took a bunch of pictures. We'll see how they come out. Lighting a dragonfly's iridescent wings with a single maglite is definitely not professional lighting, but what the hell.

Discovered that reversing a 50mm lens makes a wonderfully cheap and reasonable macro lens. Need to get a real adapter ring now.

On Saturday morning we went to get a new desk for our bedroom. It is nice and smooth and simple, and with the new arrangement of the furniture in the room it makes things much cozier and prettier.
In the evening we went with Carlos and his nephew to the Rush concert, which was totally awesome. These guys are getting old and they still play with incredible energy. Our seats were supposed to be good, but they were rather far away from the stage — not *that* much farther away than the really expensive ones, but distances are big in a stadium. It was a great show.

Today in the morning we went to the hospital to pick up Oralia's mother. She had an injury in her left knee, but now she is back home.

Raph kindly guided me through the libart intersector. It turns out that the (undocumented) code expects polygons specified in counterclockwise order, and OpenOffice.org was feeding them in in any order. Wrote some code to compute the ordering and reverse it if necessary. Geometry is slowly coming back to me.

Finally got off my ass and set up a modem in my office so that we can dial in from home. Stole some ipchains rules from our main gateway and put them in my laptop, where the modem is connected. I had totally forgotten that one has to tell the stupid kernel to enable IP forwarding through the lovely interface in /proc.
