Go forward in time to February 2002.
Some dweeb is using the source for GIMP plug-ins without complying with the license. Again. Mailed them as appropriate; let's see what they have to say.
It's funny how no one seems to be able to figure out how to write a Page Curl plug-in and they just steal the GIMP's.
Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime rules.
Oralia found a really nice apartment just around the corner from the office!!! It looks like we'll be moving there soon. Will take the papers in tomorrow.
Lots of GNOME 2.0 building action. It worked if I did everything manually, but not through the vicious-build-scripts. Hmmmm.
More apartment hunting. Found some good candidates; will call tomorrow during, ahem, office hours.
Finally got around to setting up DHCP at home. This turned out to be pretty painless. My laptop is happier now, and things are more convenient.
Went with Oralia to the Café de la Selva in the evening. Very pleasant. They eventually kicked us out; it looks like they close at 11:00 PM. Bleh.
We went with Hugo and Juanita to Cuernavaca for the weekend. As soon as we got there we put together the big circular trampoline where you can jump and do somersaults and get tired and lie down comfortably. When you do that, you get hot. And when you get hot, you can jump into the pool which is ridiculously cold most of the time; it takes about four days for it to heat up and that is why we only turn on the heating system when we go to C. for more time than just one weekend.
On Saturday we had lunch at a place a few blocks away from the house where they sell really good wood-grilled chicken, soups and the whatnot. We were pretty stuffed, so we went back home for a nap. We played some dominoes and rummy in the evening; Oralia kicked our butts. Went to bed.
On Sunday breakfast consisted of tlacoyos at the marketplace, which were pretty good. Then we got food for lunch: beef for grilling, charcoal for the grill, vegetables. Oralia also got a new cotton dress, simple and very pretty. Hugo and myself then rode our bikes to a convenience store to get a roll of film, but we ended up bicycling around some of the hills in the city. It was pretty tiring but it felt good --- it's good to struggle upwards for a while and then to take a long downhill road straight to the house.
We set up the grill, which looked like it had not been used for a long time. Everything turned out to be delicious, especially some ribs that we got. We were *really* stuffed then.
Before driving back to Mexico City Hugo and myself washed the car. The car did need some washing. It looks like pretty and stuff now. Overall, had a great time.
Reinstalled RHL 7.2 on my machine. Had the installer abort on me on the very last screen, but it seemed to boot just fine afterwards. Installed Ximian GNOME for prettiness. GDM would not start. It turns out that the installer had not created /etc/hosts. Why GDM would not even spit anything relevant to its logfile, I'll never know. Reinstalled my home and cvs directories. Blah blah blah.
Up a bit earlier than usual. Breakfast consisted of a delicious chicken soup that Oralia's mom had cooked.
Quick lunch at Sanborn's. Had a burger that was OK, and a pretty good chocolate milkshake.
Kromlech rehearsal in the evening. It looks like Charly's cousin can get obscene discounts on musical instruments. Hmmm. Drooled over the Roland products catalog.
The cabeza the león is now in a beautiful plant pot that Oralia got in the marketplace. Let's hope it likes sitting by the shady staircase of our building.
For dinner we had carne en chile pasilla and white rice with vegetables that Oralia's mom cooked. She is a fantastic cook.
Yesterday Chema and myself took Carlos for lunch at El Morral. Had an absolutely delicious chile en nogada. It looks like Carlos wants to bring his wife and child to Mexico; that would be fun.
I went to look at an apartment in the morning. The
building had staircases.
Today we slept until late. Had lunch at my grandmother's, who was very happy to meet Dave and feed him with too many enchiladas de mole.
Afterwards, we went downtown to the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso to listen to a violin recital by Erasmo Capilla. It was absolutely amazing; he played Bach's second partita and Bartók's sonata.
After the recital we went to the zócalo and to the cathedral. What a beautiful building.
Oralia got a new plant for the house; it is called a cabeza de león. It's really pretty.
Back home, and went to bed earlier than usual.
Fixed the endianness bugs for 16-bit images in the gdk-pixbuf-drawable functions. Bit twiddling is icky.
Released gdk-pixbuf-0.15.0 "Ben Bitdiddle Got Confused".
Set up an S-expression filter for Evolution to catch spam. Seems to be doing pretty well, but it will need progressive tweaking.
Dave and Hans Petter went to watch Lord of the Rings while Maru, Oralia and myself watched Un Mundo Raro. The latter is hilarious. I like good movies that are made on shoestring budgets.
Dave the friendly dude.
Dave brought Darjeeling and Chai teas from TeaLuxe in Harvard Square. Mmmmmmm. For some reason Darjeeling is really hard to find in Mexico. Had some sweet bread and tea for breakfast, which put me in a good mood.
On the way to the office, they had closed one of the main streets and so traffic was a complete mess; it seems that a gas truck overturned somewhere around there. Driving took half an hour more than normal. Bleh.
Lunch at the (real) Mexican food restaurant across the street from the office. The visiting hackers seemed quite delighted.
Took Oralia to the doctor. Will get her lab results tomorrow. Ugh. I hope it is nothing serious; she has been feeling pretty bad for the last four days.
Dave Camp is arriving today along with Nat and Carlos; Dave will be staying at our place. Let's hope he doesn't mind the mess...
Yesterday we set up four big-ass whiteboards for the new office. This is not a trivial task, as we found out. We should be able to write a whiteboard-HOWTO pretty soon.
Watched Antonia at my mother's house yesterday, and The Cider House Rules today. Antonia just beautiful; the best "people's life" movie I have seen in a long time. The other movie is quite good, but not as good as Antonia.
In the afternoon we went to have tamales and rosca de reyes at Oralia's parents' house. Ruben and Adriana were there as well. Had a pretty good time. Oralia's mom makes the best tamales.
Biking to the new office is very pleasant. It is much closer to home than the old office, and the way consists of mostly small streets with little traffic. And the new office does kick butt. A three-story house in a nice neighborhood; what more could you ask for?
Some huge whiteboards got delivered to the office today. They are really cool, about 3 meters in length. My mother and brother got me a kick-ass drill for Christmas that has a mode for drilling concrete, so I'm thinking of using it to hang the whiteboards on the office walls.
Géza Anda's interpretation of the Bartók piano concertos is a lot better than Martha Argerich's. But of course Argerich is the absolute best for Prokofiev. It is interesting to compare different interpretations of some work once you get to have them on different albums.
Happy new year!
Oralia and myself took a short 4-day trip to Puerto Escondido for Ruben's wedding. It was nice to be under the sun, at the beach, enjoying good seafood and a great view.
We spent Christmas Eve with Oralia's parents for a nice, simple, quiet dinner. The next day we went to the fantastically old apartment of my grandmother's sisters, where they had great food as always. The day after Christmas we left for Puerto Escondido. Finally, we spent New Year's Eve with my grandmother'rs sisters again.
Go backward in time to December 2001.
