A Sneak Peek at GNOME 2.10

GNOME 2.10 is going to be the latest and greatest thing from the GNOME Desktop Project this March 9th. Here is a sneak peek of some of the things that are currently in the GNOME 2.9 development snapshot.

GNOME Applications

Yelp

Yelp is the help browser for GNOME, and in the last 6 months has been rocketed out of the dark ages and uses the Gecko rendering engine as well as having useful features like bookmarks. In addition to Docbook, Yelp can now support HTML help, as well as man pages and GNU Info (if you activate them at compile time).

Evolution

Evolution is the popular groupware client that officially became part of the GNOME desktop in GNOME 2.8. This release cycle has led to many exciting additions to Evolution.

Eplugin Manager
eplugin: the new Evolution plugin architecture that allows extra functionality to be added to Evolution with ease.

see the weather forecast in your calendar (currently US specific)

Schedule Meeting
Improved interface to schedule meetings

GNOME System Tools

G-S-T Network
configure network interfaces, including modems and ISDN. A new modemlights applet integrates with GNOME System Tools

G-S-T Shares
configure shares in Samba and NFS

GNOME System Tools is also getting a lot of active development in other areas, and while not going to be ready for GNOME 2.10, many other configuration modules are in the works including a physical disk manager.

G-S-T Disks
control physical disks (one day)

Panel Applications

The panel applications (applets) are some of the most widely used programs in the GNOME Desktop. The latest development tree of GNOME has resulted in a great many improvements to the existing applets, as well as some new ones.

a new method for handling menus (via libgnome-menu) that implements the freedesktop.org crossdesktop menu spec.

Places Menu
A Places menu to easily access common locations and network servers

GWeather Details
Find out the daily sunrise/sunset time in GWeather

For when you've got nothing better to do, or if you're just plain addicted to FreeCell. GNOME comes with a vast quantity of games. Here are some features that you will see in games in GNOME 2.10.

Proposed Applications

A number of applications have been proposed for GNOME 2.10. Formost is a significant selection of new multimedia applications built off the powerful GStreamer multimedia framework.

Totem is a media player that is already familar to many people using the GNOME desktop. It can play almost any media you can think of and offers a simple and easy to use interface.
